Since 1970, she has traveled tirelessly worldwide, speaking at hundreds of international seminars including the United Nations on world peace, the role of women, and offering solutions for complex world problems. On every occasion, she always gives the entire audience the actual experience of self-realization.
Born in 1923 in Chindwara, in the very center of India, Shri Mataji lived her early childhood during India's fight for independence. As a child, she lived with Gandhi in his ashrams and impressed him with her wisdom and maturity. In her youth, Shri Mataji led a number of student demonstrations, focusing on political and social freedom for India. After India became independent, she continued to strive toward her vision of universal peace and unity, and worked along side those achieving important social, educational and economic reforms for India.
Shri Mataji Sahaja Yoga started the Sahaja Yoga movement in 1970 independently. Since then, she has never changed her practice of never charging for self-realization or classes and spends all of her time helping others. Through her unique methods, she has enabled thousands to experience self-realization and in turn, fully empowered them to freely give self-realization to thousands of others. Today, Sahaja Yoga Meditation centers are established in over 90 countries. She believes that global freedom, peace and righteousness are the destiny of humanity.
Shri Mataji is recognized all over the world by several prestigious institutions for Her selfless work and powerful results of Her spiritual teachings. In 1993, She was appointed as Honorary Member of the Presidium of Petrovskaya Academy of Arts and Science. In the history of this institution only 12 people have received such an honor, one of the recipients of such honor being Albert Einstein. In 1987, the Italian Government declared Shri Mataji the Personality of the Year and She has been greeted and recognized by several cities like New York, Yonkers, Los Angeles, British Columbia, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Albany and Berkley. The governor of Arizona has also recognized the humanitarian work of Shri Mataji. The US Congress, as well, has issued a proclamation recognizing Shri Mataji and Her invaluable contributions to humanity.
